Ryo Ceramic Flower Pot

The Ryo Ceramic Flower Pot is a 22cm white stoneware pot, hand built by Naoko Rodgers using pinch, coil and slab techniques. High temperature firing makes it robust enough for everyday use. Each pot comes out slightly different.

A handmade pot changes the character of an ordinary houseplant. Mass-produced pots are backgrounds, whereas one built by hand has enough presence that the plant and the vessel share the attention rather than one serving the other.

At 22cm across and 17cm high the proportions suit a medium plant, something with enough foliage to balance the pot without swamping it. Naoko Rodgers builds by pinching, coiling and slab forming rather than throwing, and she is explicit that she wants the imperfections to show. That means slight asymmetry and variation in the wall thickness, which is precisely what makes each one worth having. Stoneware fired hot enough stands up to being watered around and moved about.
