Matt black oak at this scale is a serious amount of dark surface, so the room needs light to carry it. What you gain is that the fluted pillars read entirely as form: with no grain contrast to distract, the vertical shadows on the base become the only detail, which is a stronger effect than the same legs in a pale finish.
