A hard square edge on a solid timber table is uncomfortable against forearms through a long meal; taking the corner off makes it noticeably better to sit at. The minimal finish is the trade-off worth understanding: the raw grain stays visible and tactile, but the surface is less protected than a lacquered top would be.
