Fifty-five centimetres is generous for a side table, and the extra width is what makes it useful rather than decorative. A lamp and a glass fit at the same time, which a 40cm top cannot manage without one crowding the other.

At 45cm high it sits at seat height beside most chairs, which is where a hand falls. The pedestal means it can be pushed close to a chair without a leg getting in the way of your feet.

The caveat is edge load. A pedestal concentrates the weight in one place, so a heavy lamp at the far edge will make the table want to tip. Keep the weight near the centre.
